Children's Legacy Society
A Promise to Heal and Protect
In 1969, Claire Miles, a local nurse, learned that an overworked and emotionally stressed father had, in a moment of desperation, shaken his infant son to death. Claire took immediate action, put a phone in her living room, then took out classified ads in the Santa Barbara News-Press urging parents in need to call for help. The phone rang almost 40 times that first month. She and her friends took turns answering the calls, with the hope of helping stressed parents before they hurt their children.
Since that time, CALM has been on the cutting edge of childhood trauma treatment and prevention. CALM has led the nonprofit community in adopting evidence-based practices in our treatment and prevention models and using assessment and data to evaluate our effectiveness and improve our work.
The Children's Legacy Society honors those caring and visionary individuals who, through their estate plans, are making a contribution to the future of CALM.
You can become a member of the Children's Legacy Society if you name CALM as a partial or full beneficiary in your estate plan through a will, living trust, charitable gift annuity, charitable trust or life insurance policy. You can also specify CALM as the death beneficiary on a bank account, Donor Advised Fund, commercial annuity, or qualified retirement plan (IRA, 401K, etc.). Your visionary planning will provide a legacy of leadership for CALM's future.
Benefits of membership in the Children's Legacy Society include:
- Your name displayed with fellow Society Members at honorary location and in annual report.
- Recognition at CALM signature events.
- Invitations to exclusive legacy and other leadership events.
- Special memento recognizing your membership.
The greatest satisfaction will come from knowing that your gift will continue CALM's tradition of preventing and healing childhood trauma and building resilient communities in Santa Barbara County. Your membership in the Children's Legacy Society will also encourage others to make similar gifts to further the mission of CALM.
